2014 Honey Harvest

This was the first year for Papa K’s honeybees, so we weren’t really expecting to harvest much honey.  We were pleasantly surprised with 5 full quart jars and lots of smaller jars full of the rich golden liquid. 

To harvest the honey you have to basically take apart the hive, which understandably upsets the bees.  I think my favorite part was watching them brush the bees off of the comb and watching the chunks of bees just fall away. 

To extract the honey we borrowed a separator from the local honey bee association, and it was nice!  Just have to spin the crank and the honey comes flying out.  While everyone was inside taking their turns at the crank, I snuck back outside with the smoke in one hand and camera in the other.  I had to stick my lens in that hive and get a close-up.

it’s a bit of a happy coincidence that several bloggers are having an Embrace the Camera challenge (namely my must read Ashley from Under the Sycamore) as over the weekend I decided to break out the camera remote and step in the frame.  It was a fail of a first attempt from a focus standpoint, but I’m still in love with these photos.

nothing but love

I’m terrible about printing my photos.  I’ve been married over 5 years and have yet to print my wedding photos. With the baby I decided I would start fresh and actually print.  Well it was looking bleak, no birth announcements, no Christmas cards, so far a fail.  But then opportunity knocked in the form of tinyprints.  Holy.awesome.card.selection!
 
I went with plain white envelopes and chose to decorate them myself!  It was fun to get the crayons out and doodle while the babe was napping.  (And the Huz, they tend to nap in tandem on the weekends).  I couldn’t be happier with the cards.  They are printed on super thick paper and the print quality is yummy.  You can really see that runny nose in action!  I also got to add a pic to the back of the card.  There can never be too much of his adorable face!  I’m super excited to send these to our family to shower them with love this Valentine’s Day!

Traveling with a little guy could have been awful, but he was a dream.  He had very little trouble on the four different plane rides and did really well all week.  He didn’t sleep the best, but he made up for that by taking LONG naps during the day.  He even let me take an evening away to swim with photoluminescent plankton and an afternoon snorkeling with papa.  It was so much fun to introduce him to my cousins and their parents.  We even did a 2 mile run/walk on the beach during which we had to fight through a tropical shower.  Of course he loved it.  His favorite place to be all week had to be the pool though.  Poor little guy was always so hot, he really enjoyed his afternoon dips in the pool!  Getting him signed up for swim lessons asap!

A portrait of my son once a week, every week, in 2014.

It’s cold outside, but your smiling face is keeping us all warm.  We bought you a walker and while you can barely touch the floor, you love sitting in it and playing with your toys.  It also lets you watch us as we pick up the house and get ready for work in the morning, productivity is good for mom and dad!  Your two teeth give you the appearance of a reverse rabbit, on the rare occasion you let us see them.   

4 Months

At his 4 Month appointment our little guy weighed 19lbs 4oz and measured 27.5 inches tall.

 

Harlan

• Has 2 Teeth!
• Can roll over front to back and back to front, though he doesn’t do either too often
• Loves to sit in his new walker
• Enjoys “watching” TV.  Especially when we try to keep him from doing it.
• Constantly talks and tells stories
• Loves to swim
• Blows bubbles CONSTANTLY
• Slobbers uncontrollably
• Is in size 3 diapers
• Already has a stamp in his passport
• Tries to put EVERYTHING in his mouth
• Has an iron grip, especially when he gets a hold of mom’s hair
